How to Install Sod — Step by Step Guide

Installing sod the right way makes all the difference in how quickly it establishes. Follow these steps for best results in north Mississippi. Questions? Call (662) 863-4336.

Step 1 — Prepare the Soil

Remove all existing grass and weeds. Till the soil 4–6 inches deep. Grade the area so it slopes slightly away from your house for drainage. Rake smooth.

Step 2 — Test and Amend

Mississippi soils often benefit from lime to raise pH. A basic soil test from your local co-op is worth doing. Add starter fertilizer (high phosphorus) before laying sod.

Step 3 — Lay the Sod

Start along a straight edge like a driveway or sidewalk. Stagger the seams like brickwork — never line up the joints. Butt edges tightly together with no gaps or overlaps.

Step 4 — Roll and Water Immediately

Roll the sod with a lawn roller to ensure good soil contact. Water immediately and thoroughly — the entire sod layer and 2–3 inches of soil below should be wet. This is the most critical step.

Step 5 — Watering Schedule

Days 1–14: Water daily, keeping sod moist at all times. Days 15–21: Water every other day. After 3 weeks: Water deeply 2–3 times per week. Tifway 419 Bermuda typically roots in 2–3 weeks. Zeon Zoysia may take 3–4 weeks.

Step 6 — First Mow

Mow when the sod reaches about 3–4 inches tall — usually 2–3 weeks after installation. Set mower high for the first cut. Do not mow too short too soon.
